FAQ

The SAP world, in six questions

These are the first six — the full, growing set lives at the SAP FAQ: 99 questions.

What is SAP, and where does it come from?

SAP was founded in 1972 in Germany by five former IBM employees with one idea: standard business software that processes data in real time instead of overnight batches. Five product generations later — R/1, R/2, R/3, mySAP/NetWeaver, S/4HANA — that idea became the backbone of enterprise computing. The timeline above tells the story as SAP itself does.

What is SAP famous for?

SAP established the global standard for enterprise resource planning (ERP) software — the integrated systems that run finance, procurement, supply chain, HR and customer processes in most of the world’s large companies. Its current era, in SAP’s own words, is "the age of AI": cloud ERP with AI, data and applications interconnected.

How big is the SAP world today?

SAP states 400,000+ customers in 180+ countries, a cloud user base of over 350 million, €36.8 billion FY2025 revenue and 110,000+ employees — by the Integrated Report 2025 data: 50,837 in EMEA, 32,053 in APJ and 27,760 in the Americas. SAP customers generate 84% of total global commerce (fact sheet, July 2026). The professional ecosystem is SAP-reported at more than 5 million consultants (June 2024), with 4 million learners since 2022 and roughly 3 million SAP Community members — overlapping populations, and the audience this platform writes for.

How is SAP performing right now?

By SAP’s own Integrated Report 2025: total revenue grew 11% to €36.8 billion, cloud revenue rose 23% to €21.0 billion — within it the Cloud ERP Suite up 28% to €18.1 billion — operating profit increased 31%, and free cash flow reached €8.2 billion, nearly doubling year-on-year. The Current Cloud Backlog stands at €21.1 billion, some 86% of revenue is now "more predictable", and SAP guides cloud revenue of €25.8 billion or more for 2026.

Where is SAP heading?

SAP’s CEO letter calls 2025 "an inflection point": Business AI "graduated from a possibility to an absolute necessity." The direction is Joule as the AI user experience for every user, agentic AI embedded in end-to-end processes, SAP Business Data Cloud as the data foundation, and a land-and-expand cloud model through RISE and GROW — alongside a stated net-zero-by-2030 commitment.
