Faster Close
Every ERP vendor promises a faster close. The close doesn't care about promises — it is the one benchmark you already measure every month.
Why the close is the honest metric
Fact: The month-end close aggregates almost every finance-relevant property of an ERP landscape: master-data quality, intercompany reconciliation, subledger integration, exception volume, and the number of manual hand-offs. User reports on modern cloud ERP — including the finance reviews in TrustRadius' 2026 market data — consistently name faster close cycles, consolidation and statutory reporting among the most-felt improvements.
Inference: When a close shortens after a migration, the cause is rarely "the software is faster". It is that the migration forced the clean-up the close had been paying interest on for years: harmonised charts of accounts, de-duplicated master data, standardised intercompany flows. That has a sharp implication — a brownfield conversion that carries the old entanglement (see SAP Clean Core strategy) will also carry the old close.
Point of view: Make close-time a contractual acceptance criterion of your finance transformation, not a hoped-for side effect. Baseline it honestly (days, people-hours, exception counts), name the target, and attribute every gained day to its cause. A programme that cannot say which close step it removes is decorating the ledger.
Where close-days actually hide
- Manual reconciliations between subledgers and GL — integration debt wearing an accounting costume.
- Intercompany mismatches — a master-data and policy problem, not a booking problem.
- Late error discovery — validation at period-end instead of at posting time.
- Spreadsheet consolidation layers — each one a private data model with a private timetable.
Monday-morning questions
- How many days is our close, and which single step consumes the most of them?
- How many spreadsheets stand between our subledgers and the reported number?
- If the close is the acceptance test, what target date are we willing to sign?
Where this connects
The market evidence sits in SAP Cloud ERP in finance; the investment logic in ERP ROI — evidence over folklore. All tracks: Executive Clarity topic tracks.
