Shared Business Context & Unified Data

An AI that doesn't know how your processes connect can only automate fragments. Context and data are where autonomy is actually decided.

The problem, precisely

Fact: The consistent finding across enterprise-AI programmes — echoed in SAP's own Autonomous Enterprise guide — is that scaling fails structurally, not technically: AI operates without real business context (it processes data but does not know how decisions propagate between functions), data and systems remain fragmented, and each function's AI competes for data under different assumptions and timelines.

Inference: "Shared business context" is two assets, not one. First, a governed data foundation — one source each for master data, transactions and semantics, so finance and operations answer the same question with the same number. Second, a machine-readable process context — how an order becomes demand, demand becomes supply, supply becomes cost — so an action in one function can be evaluated for its effect on the next.

Point of view: Fund the boring asset first. Platforms marketed for this — SAP's Business Data Cloud among them — can accelerate the work, but no product buys you semantic agreement between your own departments. That is a governance achievement, and it is transferable: it pays off in every BI report and every audit even if your AI ambitions pause.

What good looks like

  • One governed source per master-data domain; duplicates measured and shrinking.
  • Cross-functional metric definitions signed off once, centrally — not re-negotiated per dashboard.
  • Process maps that are current, owned, and expressed as data — the raw material for agent context.
  • Data products with named owners and consumers, instead of point-to-point extracts.

Monday-morning questions

  • Pick one number the board saw last week: how many systems and hands produced it?
  • Which master-data domain causes the most reconciliation effort — and who owns fixing it?
  • If an AI asked "what happens downstream if I confirm this order?", could any system answer?
