The Insight-to-Action Gap
Your supply-chain team sees the disruption coming. Your finance team reconciles numbers that were stale at decision time. The insight was there — the action queued behind the org chart.
The relay-race problem
Fact: Most enterprises still operate sequentially: systems record what happened, teams interpret, coordinate, then act — and every hand-off adds delay. SAP's Autonomous Enterprise guide calls this the relay-race principle and identifies the delay between recognising and acting as the emerging strategic bottleneck: efficiency gains stay local, and skilled people spend their time coordinating work rather than advancing it.
Inference: The gap is measurable, and measuring it changes the AI conversation. For any critical signal — a disruption, a risk flag, a demand shift — you can time the path from first detection to completed response. That number is a better AI business case than any use-case catalogue: it converts "we should do AI" into "we leave X days and Y euros between knowing and doing".
Point of view: Before funding another insight layer, instrument the action layer. Most organisations are over-supplied with dashboards and under-supplied with paths from signal to completed response. If a new tool shortens time-to-insight but not time-to-action, it decorated the bottleneck instead of removing it.
Measuring your gap
- Pick five recurring signals that genuinely matter (stock-out risk, blocked revenue, credit exposure, delivery deviation, margin drift).
- For each, time the full path: detection → interpretation → coordination → decision → completed action.
- Attribute the delay: how much is system latency, how much is hand-offs and meetings?
- Close the largest human-coordination share first — that is where agents earn their keep.

- What is our insight-to-action time for the three signals that cost us most?
- Which meetings on our calendar exist purely to move information between functions?
- When we bought our last analytics tool, did any action get faster?
